City of Grand Junction Initiates Next Steps of 4th and 5th Street Pilot Project

The City of Grand Junction will launch the next steps of the 4th and 5th Pilot Project with work beginning Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, on 5th Street heading north from Ute Avenue.

The pilot project is designed to reduce speeds on 4th and 5th Streets which will increase safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians and address capacity in anticipation of future growth. The blocks between North Ave. and Ute Ave. on 4th and 5th Streets are undergoing a transformation into one-lane, one-direction streets.

The first phase of this project began in mid-July to include minor concrete curb work, chipseal, and restriping. Vehicle traffic was narrowed to a one-way, single lane on 4th St. The work on 5th St. south of Grand Ave. will incorporate the revised 4th Street geometry that better accommodates emergency services vehicles with an 18' travel lane while still maintaining a bike lane protected by parallel parking. North of Grand, there will be a 14' travel lane and the existing parallel parking on the left-hand side will remain.

Community members can provide feedback about the project at EngageGJ.org.Moreinformation.

The design being implemented in the pilot is the result of feedback provided in the 4th and 5th Street Feasibility Study conducted in 2022 with additional input from businesses and residents in 2023.
