Elections 2024: How Nextdoor is Empowering Neighbors to Take Part

Elections are top of mind for neighbors around the world. November 5th is an important day across the US, as neighbors across the country will have the opportunity to cast their vote in national and local elections. To prepare for this special Tuesday, Nextdoor has built on past infrastructure, developed new solutions, and partnered with leading non-partisan organizations to support safe and fair election cycles to help neighbors connect with the resources they need to take part in this important part of civic engagement.

Voter Registration Resources and Reminders

Nextdoor will be posting reminders over the coming weeks that will include voter resources for your area, including voter registration deadlines and ways you can still register in your state. These posts will include instructions for how to check your voter registration in your state and other important information.

Find your polling location

In an August 2024 Nextdoor poll, we learned that 25-30% of neighbors are unsure where they can vote. To help neighbors find their polling precinct, we are rolling out an Elections Map. In the coming days and weeks, look for messages like the one below to access the Elections Map relevant to your area, as well as other information pertinent for casting your vote.

Navigating Elections Season Conversations

Even when intentions are good, conversations about elections can get heated. Neighbors can find resources, FAQs, and information on Nextdoor's policies around discussing national and local politics here. As a reminder, discussions of national partisan politics are not appropriate for the main feed, but can be discussed in private Groups. Nextdoor's Voter Toolkit also provides important information regarding Nextdoor's policies about election discourse on the platform, and tips for having civil conversations with neighbors.

Additionally, when a neighbor may be in the process of posting uncivil election-related content, Nextdoor's Election Civility Reminder encourages them to restructure their post to comply with Nextdoor's Community Guidelines. As with the Kindness Reminder, Nextdoor's Election Civility

Reminder isn't meant to discourage disagreement or differing viewpoints, but rather, supports neighbors with posting content that does not violate guidelines.

Vote.org and Democracy Works

For the fourth consecutive election cycle, Nextdoor has continued its support for Vote.org by promoting its crucial, non-partisan work and sharing Vote.org's messaging in the leadup to Election Day. As part of this effort, Neighbors can also access a tool that shows them what's on the ballot in their area.

Nextdoor is also collaborating with Democracy Works, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization that helps connect voters to accurate, up-to-date voting information and resources. Through this initiative, neighbors will receive reminders about important voting dates and deadlines relevant to their location. All data comes directly from authoritative government sources, such as state and local election officials.

Public Agencies

Public agency partners are some of the most trusted voices on Nextdoor. As in past elections, Nextdoor will continue to provide agency partners with nonpartisan voter resources to share with their communities before November 5th.
