Argentina intensifies links with Italy and Canada

Within the framework of the High Level Week of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, in whose General Debate President Javier Milei participated this afternoon, Foreign Minister Diana Mondino continued with her agenda today in New York, which included bilateral meetings with her counterparts from Italy, Canada and the United Kingdom.

In the morning, after attending the opening of the General Debate of the General Assembly, Minister Mondino held a working meeting with her counterpart from the Italian Republic, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, Antonio Tajani, who confirmed his upcoming visit to Argentina on 7-8 October, along with an important business delegation.

Among the topics addressed during the working meeting, both ministers reviewed political issues on the bilateral agenda, as well as the serious situation in Venezuela, among other various regional and global issues. In addition, they agreed on the need to expand and diversify bilateral trade in strategic sectors, especially in areas such as food, knowledge-based services, biotechnology, software and the aerospace sector. For her part, Mondino pointed out the dynamism of Italian investments in Argentina and the diversity of sectors with presence of Italian companies in this historical moment.

The Argentine Foreign Minister also met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Mélanie Joly, to follow up on the continued contact that high-level officials from the two countries have been maintaining in recent months.

Mondino and Joly highlighted the excellent level of the bilateral relationship, which is based on shared principles, values ​​and interests, while also analyzing key issues of common interest at the hemispheric and global level, based on converging priorities.

During the meeting, they assessed the shared efforts to promote democracy and the rule of law in the region, focusing mainly on regional challenges such as the situation in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Haiti. In this regard, they discussed Argentina's key role in supporting democratic governance and against the erosion of the rule of law and human rights in the region. Likewise, they discussed positions regarding extra-regional conflicts and shared concerns about the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East.

Continuing with her agenda, the Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship held a meeting with her counterpart from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, David Lammy, with whom she advanced a broad agenda of issues including different aspects in connection with the South Atlantic, which is, alongside any outcomes, subject to the sovereignty safeguard formula contained in paragraph 2 of the Joint Declaration of 19 October 1989 referring to the sovereignty dispute over the Malvinas, South Georgias and South Sandwich Islands and the surrounding maritime areas.
