Technology Ireland urges Government to prioritise skills, growth, founders and digital delivery

Technology Ireland, the Ibec group that represents the technology industry, has today released its submission for Budget 2025. Technology Ireland is calling on Government to use the next Budget to prioritise skills, growth, founders and digital delivery for the state.

The upcoming budget must recognise the transformative power of technology and prioritise initiatives that foster a robust, resilient and forward-thinking tech ecosystem. Technology Ireland calls on the Government to provide €100 million annually over the period 2025-2030to meet the commitments in our national and EU digital transition targetsin line with national digital strategies, and to provide continued funding for digital transition measures currently funded via the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.

Una Fitzpatrick, Director of Technology Ireland said: 'Given the high priority assigned to digitalisation from the European Commission, Ireland would greatly benefit from appointing a Minister of State for Digital Delivery in the Department of An Taoiseach. With responsibility for coordinating relevant Government policies and programmes across Departments, developing our digital infrastructure and public services, bridging digital divides, and engaging stakeholders, the appointment would strengthen the Government's commitment to securing Ireland's position as a world leading digital economy.'

The Government will have a surplus nearing €2 billion in the National Training Fund (NTF) in 2025 and a significant release of investment from the fund should be outlined in Budget 2025. The effective utilisation of this investment is paramount for Ireland to successfully navigate the green and digital transitions. For example, advancements in generative AI and transformational technologies promise a cross-sectoral revolution which must be supported by proactive efforts in workforce development and lifelong learning.

This budget must seek to respond to evolving tax regimes to preserve and enhance Ireland's appeal as a prime tech business destination. Support for startups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are a key priority. Ensuring founders are encouraged to scale and retain their businesses in Ireland and that supports meet the realities of the lifecycle of a founder.

Budget 2025 offers numerous opportunities to sustain and grow the tech sector in Ireland. As a key component of Ireland's economic success, it is vital that the sector sees continued support and that any complacency is avoided.
