Moulton Accepting Nominations for Volunteer Service Award

SALEM, MA - Congressman Seth Moulton is now accepting nominations for the 9th annual Peter J. Gomes Service Award.

Constituents are encouraged to nominate 6th District residents who volunteer their time to give back to their community and epitomize the qualities of integrity, compassion, and commitment to community taught by Rep. Moulton's great mentor, the late Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes.

Reverend Professor Gomes served for nearly 40 years in Harvard University's Memorial Church, a space built to honor Harvard's public servants who died in WWI. As a preacher, a teacher, and a leader, he influenced many with his wit and wisdom, and, above all, with his commitment to service. It was Reverend Professor Gomes who inspired Rep. Moulton to serve in the Marines, and later, to run for Congress.

One of Reverend Gomes' core teachings is embodied by this quote from his writing:

"The very definition of service is to love our neighbors as ourselves, work for peace and not for war, and remember that the only hands on earth to do the work of service are our own."

Congressman Moulton will announce the recipient of this year's Peter J. Gomes Service Award at an awards ceremony this fall. Other outstanding nominees will also be honored at the event.

"My friend and mentor, Reverend Gomes, talked a lot about the importance of service," said Congressman Moulton. "He would always say to me that it wasn't enough to just believe in service, or support those who serve - I've got to go out and do it myself. His words helped me muster the courage to join the Marines, but it also inspired me to do something I never thought I'd do: Dedicate my life to service as an elected official. I'm always impressed by the number of people in our community who are so deeply committed to the cause of public service, and I'm honored to help keep the legacy and spirit of Reverend Gomes alive through this award."

Any questions about the award and the nominations process can be directed to Claudia Runk ([email protected]).

Sixth District residents are invited to submit a nomination by completing this form. The deadline for submissions is 11:59pm on Friday, August 23, 2024.
