Mayor Van R. Johnson, II Appointed Chair of NLC Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee

SAVANNAH - The National League of Cities (NLC) announced the 2025 leadership team last week. Savannah Mayor Van R. Johnson, II was named Chair of the Public Safety and Crime Prevention Committee and reappointed to the NLC Board of Directors. Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome of Baton Rouge, La., was elected as NLC President.

Mayor Johnson's appointment highlights his leadership and commitment to addressing critical safety issues in cities nationwide. As Chair, he will guide the committee's efforts to develop policies and advocate for resources to improve public safety, strengthen law enforcement-community relations, and address pressing challenges such as violent crime prevention and emergency response.

"I am honored to serve and represent Savannah in this vital role," Mayor Johnson said. "Public safety remains a cornerstone of thriving communities, and I look forward to working alongside fellow leaders to advance innovative solutions that protect and empower our residents."

The announcement was made during NLC's 2024 City Summit in Tampa, Fla., where Mayor-President Weston Broome also emphasized her vision for building resilient, inclusive communities.

In addition to Mayor Johnson, the NLC leadership team includes Mayor Steve Patterson of Athens, Ohio, as First Vice President and Councilmember Kevin Kramer of Louisville, Kentucky, as Second Vice President.

Mayor Johnson joins a distinguished group of leaders across NLC's Board of Directors and Federal Advocacy Committees, reflecting Savannah's growing prominence on the national stage. His appointment underscores the city's commitment to advancing best practices in public safety and fostering a safer, more equitable future for all.
