For the second year in a row, an Avnet Cares team in Guadalajara spent the day on a project to protect their community's natural environment. They partnered with Bosque Urbano, a local nonprofit whose mission is to make the Metropolitan Zone in Guadalajara the most wooded in the entire country of Mexico, with a goal of having one tree for every inhabitant.

The local Avnet team had 70 volunteers in total, with friends and family helping to participate. The group planted 100 trees at bosque Centinela. The team was tasked with exploring the forest area to find suitable places to plant the trees, digging a hole with a pick and shovel, planting the tree, and then securing it with wooden posts.

Increasing the number of trees in an area is a proven way to prevent climate change and reduce carbon in the atmosphere. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, as trees grow, they help stop climate change by removing carbon dioxide from the air, storing carbon in the trees and soil, and releasing oxygen into the atmosphere. Trees provide many benefits, including cooling shade, blocking cold winter winds, attracting birds and wildlife, purifying our air, preventing soil erosion, and cleaning our water.

This was the second year for the group to participate in this activity and they were happy to learn that their effort last year resulted in a deforestation survival rate of 80%, which is very successful.
