The FDNY celebrates 150th anniversary of Ladder 17

September 26, 2024

The FDNY marked an historic milestone for Ladder 17 on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, celebrating 150 years of service to the Mott Haven neighborhood in the Bronx with members, alumni, family and friends.

Established in 1874 and originally pulled by two horses, Ladder 17 went into service on Jan. 1, 1874. It is the oldest FDNY truck company in the Bronx.

"For 150 years, Ladder 17 has stood ready to serve and protect the people of this community 24 hours a day, seven days a week," Assistant Chief of Operations John Sarrocco said. "Responding day and night to protect the neighborhood is difficult work, but that's what it takes at a firehouse. That's our greatest tradition on this job-always being ready to respond when the alarm sounds."

Battalion Chief Chris Williamson said Ladder 17 is a family affair. He was a captain at Ladder 17 for four years and used to visit the firehouse as a kid when his father was assigned there in January of 1970.

"The neighborhood of Mott Haven has certainly changed over the past 150 years, but one constant has been the service and dedication of Ladder 17," Chief Williamson said. "Ladder 17 has always prepared and adapted to the ever-changing demands of the modern fire emergency and hazardous materials incidents it responds to every day."

Known as the "Green Beret," Ladder 17 had one officer, 12 firefighters and two horses when it went into service. Over the 150 years, five members have made the Supreme Sacrifice and 23 members from the company have been awarded medals of valor. Additionally, the company has earned 20 unit citations for acts of teamwork and proficiency recognized by the Department.
