Weather-Related Street Closure Updates

As of 1:30 p.m. Sept. 3, 2024:

Two underpasses (Mockingbird Lane and Butternut Street) were closed Monday. The City is working to get both of these underpass locations opened today (Tuesday). Pumps at Mockingbird were doing their job for the majority of the weekend, but could not keep up with the amount of water received. Stormwater services is currently manually pumping the water at this underpass and it should be open shortly.

The Butternut underpass was closed yesterday due to elevated water levels. The pumps at this location are non-operational. New pumps have been on order, but are subject to extended manufacturing and logistical delays. Once these new pumps arrive, the issues at the Butternut underpass should be resolved. In the meantime, Stormwater Services is manually pumping this underpass and should be able to open the underpass shortly.

Another street closure due to elevated stormwater is the low water crossing at Will Hair Park. Elevated flowing water created a potential hazard, prompting the City to close the crossing. This closure is expected to remain until the water subsides.

These closures ensure the safety of the traveling public. The City of Abilene encourages all travelers to pay attention to the conditions and avoid driving through areas where stormwater is elevated across roadways.
