The City of Grand Prairie has earned the 2024 Excellence in Economic Development Silver Award by the International Economic Development Council (IEDC).

The IEDC recognized the City's Economic Development Department in the Entrepreneurial & Small Business Development category for its impactful Entrepreneur U and Franchise U programs.

"I am excited that our programs have been recognized with this prestigious award," said Kay Brown-Patrick, Business Manager of Economic Development.

Since its launch, the program has supported over 600 participants, guiding them through essential steps such as business planning, securing funding, and navigating the Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) certification process. These efforts have resulted in significant achievements, including securing substantial funding, establishing legal business formations, registering businesses to work with the City, and acquiring several MWBE certifications.

Building on its success, Entrepreneur U will expand next year with an 8-week cohort for second-stage entrepreneurs seeking to improve operational efficiency. Franchise U offers virtual workshops on franchising, covering franchise opportunities, costs, risks, financing options, and legal considerations. The initiative aims to increase franchisee and franchisor opportunities in underserved communities.

"We are eager to build on the strong foundation we've created and continue driving economic growth and innovation," added Brown-Patrick. "The quantitative results highlight the significant impact of these programs, and we are committed to advancing this important work."
