WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Motorists should expect delays at the US-2/M-28 (Sunday Lake Street) intersection in Wakefield, Gogebic County, as the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) removes the existing traffic signal at the intersection.
Beginning at approximately 7 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 17, crews will remove the signal. This work will require closing the intersection intermittently, along with lane closures and traffic regulators. The Michigan State Police will be on hand to assist with traffic control. Motorists should use appropriate caution while driving through the intersection.
Crews will perform this work during daylight hours and are expected to be finished by Wednesday, Dec. 18. The work is dependent on weather and other factors and may need to be rescheduled for later that week.
A detailed study evaluating the safety and operational performance of this intersection has been completed, and it was determined the intersection does not warrant a traffic signal. The current all-way stop condition will remain in effect. The study determined this was the most appropriate intersection configuration.
MDOT will continue to work with local safety partners to monitor the intersection prior to a planned US-2 rebuilding project in the area.
