Answering the Call: Protecting Sea Lions in the Sea of Cortez

The Sea of Cortez is a haven for marine life, but for sea lions at Consag Rock, it's become a deadly battleground. Trapped in the same gill nets used to exploit totoaba fish, these iconic animals face unnecessary suffering and death

Back This Campaign

Sea Shepherd's work in the region has already delivered extraordinary results. Thanks to your support, our flagship vessel, the Seahorse, maintains a constant presence in the Vaquita Refuge, successfully driving illegal fishing out of the Zero Tolerance Area (ZTA). But the nets used to target totoaba don't just endanger the critically endangered vaquita-they threaten the entire ecosystem, including the vulnerable sea lion population at Consag Rock.

The Problem: Deadly Nets and the Greed Driving Them

The same illegal gill nets responsible for pushing the vaquita to the brink of extinction are ensnaring sea lions, leaving them to face agonizing deaths. These nets, driven by the totoaba black market, kill indiscriminately, devastating marine life and disrupting fragile ecosystems.

Sea lions at Consag Rock, home to a significant population of these animals, have become unintentional victims of this greed-fueled crisis. Without intervention, these deadly traps will continue to threaten their survival.

Your Impact: A Strong Foundation to Build On

Because of you, the Seahorse has become a powerful force in the Sea of Cortez. Equipped with a newly installed 3-ton crane and fast boats, the Seahorse has been critical in removing ghost nets, deflecting pangas, and safeguarding marine life.

This constant vigilance has allowed Sea Shepherd to turn its attention to another urgent issue in the region: rescuing sea lions entangled in these deadly nets. While this progress is a testament to your unwavering support, there is more work to be done.

The Solution: Tools for the Fight

To meet the growing demand for rescue operations, Sea Shepherd urgently needs:

  • Sedation Tools: portable anesthesia machine, heart rate monitor, and sedation darts
  • Rescue Gear: hoop and containment nets, work mats, and surgical equipment
  • Safety Gear: shields and gloves to protect our crews from dangerous sea lion bites.

These tools are essential to scaling our rescue efforts and ensuring our teams can operate safely and effectively. Your support makes this life-saving work possible.
