Richard Nephew, Expert on Iran and Sanctions, Joins The Washington Institute as Adjunct Fellow

Washington, DC - Richard Nephew, a seasoned government official with high-level experience in the National Security Council and the Departments of State and Energy, has joined The Washington Institute for Near East Policy as an Adjunct Fellow. Nephew, who most recently served as the inaugural U.S. Coordinator on Global Anti-Corruption, will bring to the Institute his extensive knowledge of Iran, nuclear weapons, sanctions policy, and energy markets.

Berkowitz Chair in U.S. Middle East Policy.

In his government career, Nephew has served as Deputy Special Envoy for Iran, Principal Deputy Coordinator for Sanctions Policy at the Department of State, Director for Iran at the National Security Council, and several senior civil service staff roles.

Currently, Nephew is a Senior Research Scholar at the Center for Global Energy Policy at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs. Since joining Columbia in 2015, he has written dozens of reports and articles for various publications focused on Mideast geopolitics. He is the author of highly regarded The Art of Sanctions: A View from the Field, published by Columbia University Press in 2018.

In addition to his appointments at Columbia and The Washington Institute, he operates his own consulting firm, "Go Beyond Compliance."

Nephew holds a master's degree in Security Policy Studies and a bachelor's degree in international affairs, both from the George Washington University.
