Through Medicare, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (First Nations) people can receive annual health checks from their doctor, as well as follow-up services from other health professionals, that are specifically for First Nations people. These services aim to identify and treat common health conditions that disproportionately affect First Nations people.
28% of First Nations people had an annual health check in 2023
63% of First Nations people received at least one health check in the 5-year period to 30 June 2023
45% of First Nations people who had a health check in 2022 had a follow-up service within 12 months
In 2023, over two-thirds of health check patients aged 55 and over had a chronic disease management service
