Aug 25, 2024

Community members are invited to attend International Observe the Moon Night on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. Jack C. Davis Observatory on campus at Western Nevada College will host the free event.

International Observe the Moon Night is a worldwide public event that encourages observation, appreciation and understanding of our Moon and its connection to space science, exploration and human culture. This annual event connects scientists, educators and lunar enthusiasts from around the world.

The event at the Jack C. Davis Observatory is set for 7 to 11 p.m. and will include a lecture about the Moon by Dr. Thomas Herring, guided lunar observations, including naked eye observations, binocular observing and telescope viewing with JCDO volunteer staff.

"We'll also have free Moon maps and Moon observation journals that you can take home to continue enjoying the Moon on your own," Dr. Herring said.

International Observe the Moon Night is sponsored by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) mission and the Solar System Exploration Division at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, with many contributors. LRO is managed by NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., for the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

No registration is needed and as always admission is free. The Jack C. Davis Observatory is on campus at Western Nevada College at 2269 Vanpatten Ave. in Carson City.
