Special Musical Event Highlights UW Harlow Series July 11

Instead of the usual scientific research discussion, a special musical event will be presented Thursday, July 11, as part of the weekly Harlow Summer Seminar Series at the University of Wyoming-National Park Service (UW-NPS) Research Station. The facility is located at the AMK Ranch in Grand Teton National Park.

"The Wyoming Festival: New Music in the Mountains" will be presented by Anne Guzzo, the festival's director, and music director Holly Mulcahy. The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with a barbecue, followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. The events are free and open to the public, although a $10 donation is suggested.

The Wyoming Festival is a five-day chamber music festival devoted to the creation of new concert music inspired and informed by the wild and natural setting of Grand Teton National Park. Through a competitive process, five music composition fellows -- Becka Dulaney, Asia Fajardo-Diamond, Daniel Galbreath, Bonnie McLarty and Shawna Wolf -- have been invited to participate along with Guzzo, a former UW Department of Music professor.

Their music will be performed by Wyoming Festival chamber music artists-in-residence and world-renowned musicians, all of whom also play in the Grand Teton Music Festival Orchestra. The ensemble is led by violinist Mulcahy and includes Stephanie Key, clarinet; Steve Laven, cello; Barbara Scowcroft, violin; and Kayla Williams, viola.

A free preview concert will take place at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, in Ordway Auditorium A of the Teton County Library, located at 125 Virginian Lane in Jackson. The July 11 concert will be at the Berol Lodge at the AMK Ranch.

Sponsors include Mickey Babcock, supporting the work of women composers, and the UW-NPS Research Station.

Guzzo is a Wyoming-based composer who draws on science and nature in her works. She has directed the Wyoming Festival since its inception in 2017, and she taught composition at UW for more than two decades. Guzzo is the composer-in-residence for the Wyoming Symphony and an Emmy Award nominee.

Guzzo's works have been heard across the globe, including on the NPR show "Performance Today"; at the Grand Teton Music Festival "Inside the Music" series; at the COP26 in Glasgow, Scotland; and at the Oregon Bach Festival.

After hearing "Scheherazade" at an early age, Mulcahy fell in love with the violin and knew it would be her future. Since then, she has won multiple positions in symphonic orchestras across the country while maintaining a robust solo career and a small nonprofit organization.

She currently serves as concertmaster of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Mulcahy also serves as Wichita Symphony's Partner for Audience Engagement -- a position dedicated to building meaningful relationships with audiences by breaking down stereotypical barriers.

About the Harlow Summer Seminar Series

Formerly called the AMK Ranch Talk Series, the Harlow program is named after retired UW Department of Zoology and Physiology Professor Hank Harlow, who helped make the UW-NPS Research Station a significant center for research and community outreach. Harlow began the popular weekly public seminars during the summer months. This summer's weekly programs are from June 20-Aug. 8.

Further details of the evening events are available at www.uwnps.org, where those interested can join a mailing list.
