Collaboration between spine and pain specialists can foster innovation

UCI Health neurosurgeon sees exciting potential ahead

IN THE NEWS: Pain medicine is quickly advancing toward an exciting future, thanks in part to collaboration with spine surgeons. UCI Health neurosurgeon Dr. Michael Oh spoke to Becker's Spine Review about several ways collaboration between pain and spine specialists can improve care, outcomes and lead to greater innovation in both fields.

"Pain medicine is navigating an era of unprecedented progress, and one of the key driving forces behind this evolution is the collaborative relationship between pain specialists and spine surgeons. Oh is a board-certified UCI Health neurosurgeon who specializes in spine disorders as well as stereotactic and functional neurosurgery for movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders.

His clinical interests include endoscopic spine surgery, spinal cord stimulation, deep brain stimulation, spine tumors and spine deformities. His research focuses on developing advances in robotics for neurosurgical procedures and has been published in prominent journals, including the Journal of Neurosurgery, Neural Plasticity and Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Oh holds a patent for a device for the minimally invasive removal of blood clots in the brain.
