Improvements to M 13/M 84 (Lafayette Street) bridge detour routes start Sept. 3

BAY CITY, Mich. -The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will begin improving the detour routes of Henry and Wenona streets in Bay Cityahead of the upcoming demolition and replacement of the Lafayette Street bridge. Work will include mill and fill, as well as sidewalk and ramp improvements that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

This detour preparation is part of an approximately $112 million investment (including $73 million in grant funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law) to demolish the aging structure and build a new bridge. The new bridge will be a safe and reliable crossing over the Saginaw River that will include a new 8-foot-wide shared-use path. Work on the bridge is expected to begin early this winter.

Traffic restrictions:
Work is expected to begin on Henry Street on Tuesday, Sept. 3, with a full detour lasting approximately four weeks. Traffic will be detoured via Wenona, Thomas and Jenny streets.

Wenona Street improvements are expected to begin on Monday, Sept. 30, with a four-day detour for railroad crossing work and milling and paving, followed by single-lane closures for the remainder of the work. Traffic will be detoured via Salzburg, Euclid, Thomas, and Jenny streets.

Both roadways will remain open to local traffic only when closed.

Jobs numbers:
Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 1,355 jobs.

Safety benefit:
This work will improve and extend the life of roadways designated as detour routes ahead of the upcoming bridge replacement project.
