Foreign Ministry inaugurates 10th Summer School on Nuclear Disarmament and Non-Proliferation
  • The program aims to contribute to training new leaders in nuclear disarmament in Latin America and the Caribbean

The 10th Summer School on Nuclear Disarmament and Nonproliferation for Latin American and Caribbean diplomats, organized by the Matías Romero Institute in coordination with the Agency for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean (Opanal) and the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies, will be held from July 1-5.

The program aims to contribute to training new leaders in nuclear disarmament in Latin America and the Caribbean through analysis and reflection on the total elimination of nuclear weapons. The participants, diplomats from 26 Latin American and Caribbean States, will interact with leading diplomatic and academic experts.

The opening high-level panel on the importance of education for peace and disarmament was attended by Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights Joel Hernández García; Opanal Secretary General Flavio Roberto Bonzanini; Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence and Stability (ADS) at the U.S. Department of State, Mallory Stewart, who participated remotely; and the Director of the Arms Control and Disarmament Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, Chitaru Shimizu.

The Summer School has established itself as an example of Mexico's leadership in promoting disarmament and peace education, in line with the guiding principles of national foreign policy; it is a benchmark program in the region and a model for other regions. Since its creation in 2014, 328 diplomats (176 women and 152 men) have participated in the program.
