At the October 22 Regular Assembly Meeting, Assembly Members Felix Rivera and Randy Sulte introduced AO 2024-105, a proposal fora ballot proposition to enact a sales tax dedicated to property tax relief and capital projects, also known as "Project Anchorage."

As an invitation for the public to weigh in, the sponsors announced the launch of a webpage with more information about the ordinance: ancgov.info/projectanc.

About Project Anchorage
Project Anchorage is an initiative developed by a coalition of Anchorage businesses leaders and the Anchorage Economic Development Authority (AEDC) that proposes to enact a temporary 3% sales tax to offer property tax relief and fund the development of local projects.

If approved by the Assembly, AO 2024-105 would establish the ballot proposition language for qualified voters to consider establishing the sales tax in Anchorage Municipal Charter.

"After more than a year of work, AO 2024-105 delivers the Project Anchorage proposal to the public in full," said Assembly Member Randy Sulte, co-sponsor of the ordinance and ex-officio member of the AEDC Board of Directors. "Project Anchorage is a careful plan to improve the quality of life in Anchorage. By diversifying our revenue with a temporary sales tax, we can deliver meaningful property tax relief while funding capital projects that will benefit residents and attract visitors. The next few weeks offer the public an opportunity to shape this proposal for a stronger, more vibrant Anchorage."

Options for Public Testimony
The first of at least two public hearings on AO 2024-105 is scheduled for the Regular Assembly Meeting on Wednesday, November 6. The sponsors intend to continue the public hearing to the following regular meeting on November 19.

"Project Anchorage is not just a tax proposal-it's an opportunity for all residents to engage in shaping the future of our city," said co-sponsor Assembly Member Felix Rivera. "The testimony we receive in the coming weeks will inform the changes we make to this proposal through the legislative process, and ultimately our choice to submit the question to voters. If we approve AO 2024-105, the decision will rest in the hands of Anchorage voters, and we're committed to ensuring that everyone has a say."

The public is invited to share input on the Project Anchorage proposal:
