DECATUR, GA - Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) hosted the Sixth Annual Unsung Heroes Awards Program on Sunday, Nov. 17, recognizing 15 exceptional individuals from Georgia's Fourth Congressional District for their selfless contributions to the community. The event, held at Legacy Park in Decatur, celebrated the dedication and impact of these individuals across DeKalb, Rockdale, and Newton counties.
Since its inception in 2019, the Unsung Heroes Awards have honored over 100 community members who go above and beyond in service to others. Congressman Johnson commended this year's honorees for embodying the spirit of generosity, leadership, and resilience.
"It's my great pleasure and honor to recognize the service of this group of 15 individuals who have distinguished themselves as humble public servants and also effective human beings doing what they do," said Congressman Johnson. "They give their time, energy, and talent to make our communities stronger, safer, and more connected. It's an honor to shine a light on their achievements."
The 2024 honorees were recognized in the following categories:
• Diamond of the District: Rev. Dr. Billie Boyd-Cox, Darlene E. Hotchkiss, Esther Maclin
• Pillar of Power: Rev. Dr. Eric Wendel Lee Sr., Nancy Schulz, Coach Cleveland Stroud
• Community Cornerstone: Albert Murray, Thomas Mitcham "Mitch" Stewart, Stanley Williams
• Beacon of Light: Erik Brown, Marketa Killingbeck, Tommy Plummer
• Champion of the 4th: Garrett Crawford, Thomas McCrea, Phontonia Walter
The awards highlighted their efforts in advocating for education, supporting faith-based and civic organizations, mentoring youth, and championing the needs of veterans and underserved communities.
