Stafford Continues to Invest in Roads: Fall Transportation Projects Update

Stafford is making continuous progress on its strategic priority of developing a multimodal infrastructure and transportation system. This stemmed from community input through surveys and the 2019 Transportation Bond Referendum. The Board of Supervisors chose to move forward with a transportation program to complement the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) work. To date, Stafford has invested more than $100 million in this program. Several projects are either currently under construction, in pre-construction, or in the design phase. Additionally, Stafford has almost completed its first-ever transportation master plan, which will identify new areas of improvement.

Here is information on the major road projects that are currently underway:

The Berea Church Road Improvement Project ($12,559,494)
The project is currently under construction and on schedule, with completion estimated for FY26. Significant progress has been made since construction began in June, including installing a new water main in a portion of the road. This project will reconstruct Berea Church Road from the intersection with Warrenton Road to the intersection with Truslow Road, vastly improving roadway safety.

The Celebrate Virginia Parkway and Banks Ford Parkway Roundabout Project ($700,000)
The VDOT Fredericksburg Residency is managing the project, which is 75% completed and scheduled to be completed in October 2024. A single-lane modular roundabout is being constructed at the intersection of Celebrate Virginia Parkway and Banks Ford Parkway.

The Richmond Highway (US-1) and Telegraph Road and Woodstock Lane Improvement Project($12,489,437)
The project is in the pre-construction stage. Construction is estimated to begin in the spring of 2025 to realign the intersection of Richmond Highway and Telegraph Road and widen Richmond Highway at Woodstock Lane to allow for a protected left turn lane and access management improvements.

The Staffordboro Boulevard Sidewalk Project ($2,147,296)
The project is currently in the pre-construction stage. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2025 to construct a sidewalk along Staffordboro Boulevard between Juggins Road Connector and Pike Place and crosswalks at road crossings.

The Richmond Highway (US-1) and Courthouse Road Intersection Improvement Project($26,692,840)
The project is currently in the pre-construction stage and is expected to begin in the summer of 2025. It will widen Richmond Highway and provide improvements at the intersection of Courthouse Road and Richmond Highway and at the intersection of Bells Hill Road/Hope Road and Richmond Highway.

The Stefaniga Road and Mountain View Road Intersection Improvement Project ($5,430,280)
The projectis currently in the engineering phase and will construct a roundabout. It will also provide pedestrian improvements at Stefaniga Road and Mountain View Road intersect. The Right-of-Way and Utility activities are scheduled to begin in the spring of 2026, and construction is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2027.

The Poplar Road and Truslow Road Project($1,984,761)
The project is currently in the engineering phase, and preliminary design has begun. Additional left and right turn lanes will be constructed at the Poplar Road intersection with Enon Road and Robeli Farms Drive.

The Mine Road and Greenspring Drive Project ($3,000,000)
The project is currently in the engineering phase, and preliminary design is scheduled to begin this October. It consists of additional sidewalk connectivity and crosswalks at the intersection of Mine Road and Greenspring Drive.

The Kings Highway and Chatham Heights Road Project($3,000,000)
The project is currently in the engineering phase, and preliminary design is scheduled to begin this October. It consists of new connectivity between Chatham Bridge and the Chatham Heights neighborhood. A new sidewalk, crosswalk, and shared-use path will be constructed along Kings Highway and Chatham Heights Road.
