MEDIA ADVISORY: Chairmen Green, Garbarino Announce CrowdStrike Witness for Subcommittee Hearing on Global IT Outage

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) and Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Chairman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) announced that Adam Meyers, senior vice president of counter adversary operations at CrowdStrike, will testify in a Subcommittee hearing on September 24, 2024 to examine CrowdStrike's defective software update that caused a global information technology (IT) outage.

"I look forward to hearing testimony from CrowdStrike's senior vice president of counter adversary operations. This hearing will be an important opportunity to learn more about what steps the company has taken in the aftermath of the outage to ensure it doesn't happen again," Subcommittee Chairman Garbarino said. "While the outage was not due to a threat actor, we know our adversaries and opportunistic criminals have been watching closely. They have learned how a faulty software update can trigger cascading effects on our critical infrastructure. It's important the public and private sectors work together to mitigate risk going forward."

"Considering the significant impact CrowdStrike's faulty software update had on Americans and critical sectors of the economy-from aviation to medical services-we must restore confidence in the IT that underpins the services Americans depend on daily," Chairman Green said. "The recent incident reinforces how growing reliance on interconnected IT systems has expanded the risk surface. While we can be thankful that this wasn't a cyberattack, this incident demonstrates the urgency of promoting cyber hygiene and resiliency amid increased threats. Recognizing that Americans will undoubtedly feel the lasting, real-world consequences of this incident for some time, they deserve to know in detail how this incident happened and the mitigation steps CrowdStrike is taking to avoid the cascading impacts of outages like this across sectors."
