Since its founding in 1911 by then Times publisher, Adolph Ochs, the Fund, formerly known as The Neediest Cases Fund, has raised over $330 million to help lift the circumstances of people in the various communities The Times serves. It was one of the first programs of its kind that used journalism to encourage readers to help their neighbors in need and offered a direct path to donate.
The Communities Fund is an independent nonprofit that is fully supported by The New York Times Company, which pays all of its administrative costs. One hundred percent of donations go directly to assist people in need.
For the 2024-25 campaign, The Fund is working with nine nonprofits: Hispanic Federation; Per Scholas; Children's Aid; OneGoal; Feeding America; Catholic Charities of New York; UJA-Federation of New York; CAMFED and First Book.
