The NEOMED community took time to reflect on the many sacrifices of United States Service Members during the inaugural Celebration of Military Service on Nov. 4, 2024.
The event was highlighted by a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Purple Star Military Lounge, an area in the NEW Center for military-connected students to enjoy a private space and interact with other service members and Veterans.
Guests included five cadets and an alumnus from the U.S. Military Academy West Point, who were on hand for interviews for admission into NEOMED's College of Medicine. They were on-campus as part of the NEOMED Military Academy Reserved Seat Plan, which will reserve seats annually for individuals enrolled in one of the three military academies.
Forest Faison III, M.D., Sc.D. (hon), FAAP, senior vice president and provost of NEOMED, also read the names of NEOMED community members who had either served or had a close family member serve to stand for a moment of recognition. Among the Veterans in attendance were Dr. Faison, a retired vice admiral who served as the 38th Surgeon General of the U.S. Navy, and John T. Langell, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H., M.B.A., president of NEOMED, the former Commander (CEO) of the U.S. Air Force Health Care Facilities.
Ron Reichter, M.D., an Army Veteran and 2000 graduate of the College of Medicine, returned to campus as the keynote speaker. Dr. Reichter, a neurologist who is the current interim chief of staff for the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System, shared that the tenets he learned about primary care at NEOMED have helped him to serve others and be a more compassionate leader.
The event concluded with a ribbon-cutting, as guests mingled while getting a first look at the new Purple Star Military Lounge. The name is in recognition of NEOMED being named a Collegiate Purple Star Award institution in 2023 for its support of military-connected students and families.
