MS and MP join forces for summer water safety

Newly elected MP for the Vale of Glamorgan, Kanishka Narayan, and local Member of the Senedd, Jane Hutt, have joined forces with Associated British Ports (ABP) to raise awareness about the hazards of swimming in the port of Barry.

During a meeting in Barry, Divisional Port Manager Ashley Curnow discussed the recurring issue of young people swimming in the water at the port, along with associated anti-social behaviour.

Kanishka Narayan MP said: "Not only is the port a dangerous place to swim, but the associated anti-social behaviour negatively impacts local residents. We urge everyone to keep safe and refrain from entering the water."

Jane Hutt MS echoed the sentiment, saying, "As we approach the school summer holidays, our priority is keeping everyone safe. The RNLI's 'Float to Live' campaign provides practical steps to help individuals survive if they encounter difficulties in the water. Please stay safe and avoid swimming in the dock."

Ashley Curnow, Divisional Port Manager for Wales and the South West at ABP, emphasised the dangers: "Swimming and jumping into the water within our ports, docks, and harbours is strictly prohibited. Hidden hazards lurk beneath the water's surface, and escaping once in the water can be challenging. Please stay safe and do not enter the water."
