Brown Announces More Than $13.5 Million To Hire And Retain Law Enforcement Officers Across Ohio

WASHINGTON, D.C. -Today, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) welcomed a $13,727,275 investment to hire and retain 112 Ohio law enforcement officers to serve 13 communities and law enforcement agencies across Ohio. The investments come from the Department of Justice's COPS Hiring Program (CHP), which invests in hiring entry-level career law enforcement officers to create and preserve jobs, and increase community policing capacity and crime prevention efforts.

"We fought for these much-needed investments to ensure that law enforcement across the state can keep their communities safe. This will enable Ohio communities to hire, retain, and train dedicated officers to prevent crime and protect Ohioans," said Brown.

Investments from the Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program include:

  • $6,250,000 to the City of Cincinnati to hire 50 law enforcement officers.
  • $1,612,170 to the City of Youngstown to hire 15 law enforcement officers.
  • $1.5 million to the City of Akron to hire 12 law enforcement officers.
  • $1.5 million to the Township of Colerain to hire 12 law enforcement officers.
  • $750,000 to the Austintown Township Police Department to hire 6 law enforcement officers.

  • $250,000 to the City of Martins Ferry to hire 2 law enforcement officers.

  • $125,000 to Milton Township to hire 1 law enforcement officer.
  • $115,105 to the Village of Wintersville to hire 1 law enforcement officer.

Brown has been a champion of Ohio law enforcement. Earlier this summer, Brown securedinvestments to purchase new patrol vehicles and hire, train, and retain law enforcement officers throughout northeast Ohio. He is also pushingto pass the Social Security Fairness Act, which will ensure that law enforcement officers receive their full Social Security benefits.

Brown has also stood with Ohio law enforcement as they fight to address the fentanyl crisis. After hearing directly from law enforcement across the state about the need to keep fentanyl out of the country, before it ever comes to Ohio, Brown worked with Republicans to pass the Fend Off Fentanyl Act. This law sanctions the suppliers of fentanyl chemicals in China and the Mexican drug cartels who bring this deadly drug into the country. Now he's working to ensure that law enforcement have the tools they need to be able to detect fentanyl they may encounter while protecting their communities.
