New Chief Justice of S.C. Supreme Court Speaking on Constitution Day (09/13/24)

• Chief Justice John Kittredge will appear from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Dina's Place in the DiGiorgio Campus Center.
• This Constitution Day program will help attendees better understand the judicial system of South Carolina, the type of cases that make their way to the state Supreme Court and how justices decide them.

ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - The chief justice of the S.C. Supreme Court will help Winthrop University students understand how the court works during a Sept. 17 appearance as part of Constitution Day.

Chief Justice John Kittredge will appear from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Dina's Place in the DiGiorgio Campus Center. This particular program will help attendees better understand the judicial system of South Carolina, the type of cases that make their way to the state Supreme Court and how justices decide them. The judge also will share insights from his career in the legal profession, including his time on the bench.

The discussion will run for about an hour and will be followed by a 15-minute question and answer session. The moderator is Tony Hobert, an assistant professor of political science, whose main interest is public law.

In recognition of Constitution Day on Sept. 17, the John C. West Forum on Politics and Policy hosts an annual event to commemorate the signing of the U.S. Constitution in Philadelphia on Sept. 17, 1787.

The event is hosted by the West Forum in collaboration with the Department of Political Science, Philosophy, Religion and Legal Studies, the Political Science Honor Society and the Winthrop University Honors Association.

About John Kittredge

Born in Greenville, South Carolina, Chief Justice Kittredge graduated from the University of South Carolina, summa cum laude, in 1979. He then graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1982. His academic honors include Phi Beta Kappa, Order of the Coif, and Order of the Wig and Robe. He has served on the South Carolina bench in various roles for 33 years and was as associate justice on the S.C. Supreme Court from 2008 to 2024. Elevated to become chief justice this summer due to the previous chief's retirement, Kittredge has held this position since July 31.
