City of Boulder Issues Statement Denouncing Hate and Racism After Disturbance on University Hill

"The City of Boulder denounces racism in all forms. Hate has no place in our community.

"In light of last week's incident on the Hill in which a man reportedly used ugly, racist rhetoric while disturbing a ribbon-cutting ceremony at a Chinese restaurant, the City of Boulder reiterates our firm commitment to Boulder's Asian American community. It is an unfortunate reality that the Asian American and Pacific Islander community has for too long been a target of racism and xenophobia in the United States, and it must come to an end.

"I want to thank the local officials who continue to investigate the matter and share my gratitude for everyone involved in the response to Friday's event. The entire city of Boulder sends our best wishes for the continued recovery of Councilmember Winer and others who were impacted by the incident.

"More broadly, this case is a sad reminder that racism and hate are all too present in our community and across the country. We cannot - and should not - remain silent when we witness hatred, whether it is xenophobia against the AAPI community or increased instances of islamophobia and antisemitism. The City of Boulder continues to stand against racism, xenophobia, discrimination and intolerance in all its forms and against all peoples. The work to make Boulder a truly welcoming and inclusive community continues, and I encourage everyone in Boulder to play a part in building a world free of racism."

The City of Boulder will not be commenting further on the Sept. 6 incident at this time due to the ongoing investigation. The suspect was arrested for felony menacing and two counts of third degree assault charges. As always, suspects are innocent until proven guilty. Prosecutors will review the facts of the case and determine whether the evidence supports additional bias-motivated charges.
