The Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) 2025 code set includes 420 updates (270 new codes, 112 deletions, 38 revisions), reflecting advancements in medicine and technology. Key changes include updates in digital medicine (revised RTM services), AI applications (new codes for augmentative AI in imaging and diagnostics), and general surgery (skin grafts and tumor removal). These updates ensure the CPT remains a vital, standardized tool for data-sharing in healthcare.
Updates for 2025 introduce important changes in documentation and reporting requirements, as well as other challenges for ASCs. Read the 6 key takeaways from our coding experts before the live webinar on December 17 at 1:00PM central!
1. Skin Cell Suspension Autograft (SCSA)
This new autologous grafting technique involves three steps: tissue harvesting, processing, and application. What sets SCSA apart is its unique "spray-on" application. Proper coding guidelines for each stage of this innovative procedure will be essential for accurate reporting.
2. CMC Arthroplasty
Changes in CMC arthroplasty coding simplify reporting. A new CPT code combines interpositional arthroplasty (previously reported as 25447) with tendon transfer procedures (formerly coded as 26480 or 25310). For standalone tendon interposition, 25447 remains valid, but the new code replaces previous combinations.
3. Intra-Abdominal Tumors or Cysts
New CPT codes address excision or destruction of intra-abdominal tumors and cysts. These codes come with extensive section-specific guidelines, making it critical to review the rules thoroughly for accurate documentation and billing.
4. Thermal Ultrasound Tissue Ablation of the Prostate
Three new codes cover thermal ultrasound ablation of the prostate:
Understanding the nuances of these codes will be vital for correct reporting.
5. Fascial Plane Blocks
New CPT codes now cover thoracic and lower extremity blocks, categorized by location and technique (unilateral/bilateral or injection/continuous infusion). Unlike prior expectations, these codes do not specify block types like iPack or PENG. Coders must familiarize themselves with the procedural specifics to select the correct code.
6. Medicare LCD Updates
Starting November 17, 2025, Medicare LCD guidelines bring changes to MIG services, particularly for cataract procedures. For cataract extraction with IOL placement and aqueous drainage device insertion, Medicare allows only a single MIG procedure. Performing additional procedures, such as OMNI canaloplasty, risks claim denial.
