City Purchases Park Land in North Denton

Recently, Denton Parks and Recreation Department finalized purchasing a 2.25-acre tract of land in North Denton at 526 Hercules Lane. The property, as it exists, currently features some trees and open space. Eventually, this property will host a neighborhood park. More immediately it will provide usable open space for nearby residents. The property was purchased from the church that owns the adjacent property. Funding for the purchase comes from park dedication and development fees, which are charged to developers for the anticipated impact that new development will have on the existing parks system. Fees collected from developers can then be used within a restricted geographical range to support the purchase and development of new park space near development.

The addition of this new park land will provide a park space within a 10-minute walk to approximately 1,200 Denton residents who previously did not have a park in such close proximity. City of Denton Parks and Recreation works diligently to add property to our park land inventory both within the central city and in Denton's outer lying areas to ensure that, eventually, 100% of Denton residents will be within a 10-minute walk of a park, trail, or open space. In the last two years, the Parks and Recreation Department has added more than 373 acres to the City's park land inventory. Denton residents can see recent growth in parks acreage, as well as other operational metrics on the City's Parks and Recreation data dashboard, available at this link.
