Additional Auxiliary Lane on I-84 Eastbound in Waterbury

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans for the addition of an auxiliary lane on I-84 eastbound in the city of Waterbury, between the Exit 17 off-ramp to Route 63 (Straits Turnpike), and the Exit 18 off-ramp to Route 64 (Chase Parkway). The existing climbing lane that begins approximately 2,000 feet easterly of the Exit 17 off-ramp, will be incorporated into the auxiliary lane.

The purpose of the auxiliary lane is to mitigate traffic congestion during the AM and PM peak traveling hours and to improve safety. The project is designated as an early action project under "The New Mix", the CTDOT's program dedicated to planning for the long-term future of the Interstate 84/Route 8 interchange, commonly referred to as the Mixmaster."

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in August of 2026, with construction anticipated to start in the Spring of 2027, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding, and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with ninety percent (90%) Federal and ten percent (10%) State funds.

It is the CTDOT's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken and important that the community share its concerns with CTDOT to assist in the project's development If anyone has any questions or comments on this project, please contact Michael S. Cherpak, Principal Engineer, at (860) 594-3155 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Please make reference to State Project No.0151-0341.
