Texas Athletics Completes Paris Olympics With 16 Total Medals, Including Six Gold

PARIS - Current and former University of Texas student-athletes accounted for a total of 16 medals during the 2024 Paris Olympics, including six gold, seven silver and three bronze. If these athletes were competing as a separate country, Texas would have ranked in 16th place among all nations in the number of total medals won and tied for 14th in the number of gold medals earned. It was the Longhorns' fourth-most medals at an Olympic Games and the most since UT greats accounted for 21 medals in Athens in 2004. Texas registered its all-time high of 23 medals in Sydney in 2000 and earned 18 medals in Atlanta in 1996.

In its storied Olympics history, a total of 214 current and former UT student-athletes (representing a total of 38 different countries) have now produced a total of 178 medals, including 98 gold, 53 silver and 27 bronze.

Texas has now had a gold medalist in each of the last 11 Summer Olympics, dating back to the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and a medalist in each of the last 13 Summer Olympics, dating back to the 1976 Montreal Games. UT has had a current or former athlete compete in every Summer Olympics since the 1936 Berlin Games (21 straight Summer Games) and produced a medalist in 18 of those 21 Olympiads.

Texas registered a total of eight medals (one gold, four silver, three bronze) from its Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams at the Paris Games. Rising junior Hubert Kos of Hungary claimed the gold medal in the 200 back, while rising sophomore Erin Gemmell anchored Team USA's 4x200 free relay to silver. Former Longhorn Caspar Corbeau (Netherlands) earned bronze in the 200 breast, and the trio of rising senior Luke Hobson and former Longhorns Carson Foster and Drew Kibler won silver for Team USA in the 4x200 free relay. Hobson also claimed bronze in the 200 free, and Foster won bronze in the 400 IM.

Track and Field registered a combined five medals, including three gold, during the Paris Games, and all five medals came in individual events. This marked the most individual medals earned by Texas Track and Field in Olympic history, topping the four individual medals won in both 1992 (Seoul) and 2012 (London). Former Longhorn Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia claimed gold in the 100 meters and silver in the 200 meters and became the first Texas track and field athlete to win a pair of individual medals since Juliet Cuthbert of Jamaica won two silver (100 meters, 200 meters) in 1992. Former Longhorn Ryan Crouser became the first shot putter in Olympics history to win three gold medals, and former Longhorn Tara Davis-Woodhall claimed gold for Team USA in the long jump. Former Longhorn Leo Neugebauer of Germany took silver in the Men's Decathlon. In addition, former Longhorn standout Rhasidat Adeleke finished just off the medal stand with a pair of fourth-place finishes (400m/4x400m relay) for Ireland.

Former Longhorn Kevin Durant helped Team USA earn the gold medal in Men's Basketball and became the first men's basketball player in Olympic history to win four gold medals, as he previously led Team USA to gold at the 2012 London Games, the 2016 Rio Games and the 2020 Tokyo Games. Durant also became the first-ever Longhorn to win a medal at four Olympic Games. Former Longhorn Scottie Scheffler claimed gold in Men's Golf and became the first Texas golfer to earn an Olympic medal since the sport was added to the schedule in 2016.

Former Longhorn Chiaka Ogbogu helped Team USA to a silver medal in Women's Indoor Team Volleyball and became a two-time Olympic medalist, as she previously earned gold in Tokyo 2020. This marked the fourth-straight Olympics that Texas Volleyball had a member of a medal-winning USA team, as Destinee Hooker claimed silver in 2012 London and Rachael Adams took bronze in 2016 Rio. Ogbogu is the first Longhorn to earn two Olympic medals in Volleyball.

A total of 30 current or former University of Texas student-athletes and seven coaches with ties to UT Athletics participated in the Paris Olympics. The 30 competing athletes tied for the largest delegation The University of Texas has sent to an Olympics, equaling the previous best of 30 athletes at both the 1988 (Seoul) and 2020 (Tokyo) Games.

All told, UT athletes and coaches represented 12 different Longhorns sports programs (Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, Men's Golf, Women's Golf, Rowing, Soccer, Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving, Women's Tennis, Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field, and Volleyball) and 16 different countries (Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Great Britain, Haiti, Hungary, Ireland, Jamaica, Netherlands, New Zealand, Saint Lucia, Serbia, South Sudan, Taiwan, and the United States) during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
