Ibec welcomes Cabinet approval for Water Supply Project for Eastern and Midlands Region

Ibec, the group that represents Irish business, today welcomed Government's commitment to the Water Supply Project, Eastern and Midlands Region. Continued backing through the project delivery phase will be required to this enabling infrastructure is in place to support sustainable growth across the economy and society.

Aidan Sweeney, Ibec Head of Infrastructure & Environmental Sustainability said: "Business welcomes Government's commitment to the Water Supply Project, Eastern and Midlands Region. It is important that this project of strategic national importance proceeds speedily and without unnecessary delays. Continued backing will be required to this enabling infrastructure is in place to support sustainable growth across the economy and society. Timely delivery will bring significant benefits to a region that is home to half the population of Ireland."

"We must ensure the region's growth does not dry up. The Water Supply Project, Eastern and Midlands Region will ensure security supply. We currently have a chronic reliance on unsustainably high levels of water extraction from the River Liffey. The provision and capacity of water and other utility plays a critical role in residential and commercial development. This project is of immense importance as it is key to meeting our housing targets."
