Annual Mass Notification Exercise Held On Oct. 17

Living in a floodplain can bring with it an element of danger when heavy rains fall, and the Sacramento area was reminded of that in 2023. The flooding that hit the area was a reminder of the importance of knowing when danger is headed towards you and your family.

To prepare for that threat, Sacramento County will conduct its annual mass notification exercise designed to test the County notification system.

The potential dangers of floods and wildland grass fires highlight the importance of being prepared throughout the year. Both have forced evacuations and road closures causing residents to move quickly to avoid danger.

On Oct. 17, at 10:17 a.m., Sacramento County will test its mass notification system, Sacramento Alert, to ensure residents receive vital emergency messages during disasters.

Sacramento Alert is built upon the Smart911® Platform and is a critical link for residents to immediately learn of any required actions, such as evacuating their homes during an imminent fire. Sacramento County and City partners rely heavily on this communication tool to warn people of potential hazards and the actions to stay safe.

The County Office of Emergency Services urges residents and businesses to use this opportunity to prepare for the many hazards that threaten our community and to take proactive steps in ensuring you receive timely information during those emergencies.

During the Oct. 17 exercise, Sacramento residents will receive test messages via the Sacramento Alert system. The drill will replicate a large-scale emergency. This is the nineth annual regional exercise for Sacramento County and participating cities.

The distinctive feature of Sacramento Alert is the ability to register more than one contact method at a specific address. Registrations of cell phones and alternate numbers dramatically increase the ability to reach a great number of community members within minutes. This enables landlines, cell phones and e-mail addresses to be incorporated into a single notification system. Everbridge® and Smart911® Apps are available for downloads from the Apple Store for iOS devices and Google Play store for Android.
