08/01/2024 - Olympia 2045: August Update

August Update

Our comprehensive plan update is underway. The City is updating the plan using a phased, chapter by chapter approach. Several chapters are currently in review, with the remaining chapters kicking off soon. Please use the links below to follow the process and get involved in the chapters you're interested in - each chapter has a webpage with more detail and timeline.

Here are upcoming public meetings, engagement opportunities, and information sharing updates:

Public Participation & Partners

The draft updated chapter has been released for public viewing and is available on the project webpage at Engage Olympia. The Planning Commission will receive its first briefing on the draft changes on August 5 and is tentatively scheduled for a public hearing on October 21. The Social Justice and Equity Commission is scheduled for a briefing on August 26.

Land Use & Urban design

The Planning Commission received a briefing on the existing chapter on July 15. The intent of the briefing was to provide an introduction to the chapter, as well as how the existing and soon to be updated chapter are influenced by both the Olympia community and state requirements. More briefings and public meetings will be held when the draft updated chapter is ready, likely in the fall of 2024.

Housing

The Olympia Planning Commission received a brief from staff on the requirements and contents of the new housing element required by House Bill 1220. This new chapter of the Comprehensive Plan intends to address housing affordability as well as racial and economic displacement. In addition, strategies outlined in the Housing Action Plan adopted in 2021 will be incorporated into the Comprehensive Plan to inform new policies and goals for future affordable housing. To learn more about the Housing Chapter, please visit the Engage Olympia Housing page.

Transportation

We are hard at work on the second draft of the Transportation chapter, which we plan to post on Engage Olympia in late September, early October. If you'd like to see a summary of the public feedback we got on the first draft, please see our Engage Olympia page.

Utilities

The Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on the draft Utilities chapter on August 19, (rescheduled from September 16). The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. You can view the draft chapter on the Engage Olympia webpage at engage.olympiawa.gov/utilities2045. Written comments received by 5:00 p.m. on August 19 will be shared with the Planning Commission for consideration as it develops its recommendation for the City Council. The public hearing will be a hybrid meeting, members of the public can attend in person at city hall, or remotely via Zoom. If you would like to attend remotely, please register at https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN__Z4UkToLT0eRgmNB1wVXCg.

Public Safety

A draft of the Public Safety chapter will be available for review soon. We are tentatively scheduled to provide a briefing on the draft chapter to the Planning Commission on August 19. We will take public feedback and seek input from the Social Justice and Equity Commission prior to holding a public hearing.
Olympia 2045 is your opportunity to shape the City of Olympia's long-term vision and goals. Through this process we will update the City's Comprehensive Plan and address new or updated state requirements. The Olympia 2045 update will also consider population projections and resulting employment and housing needs, as our community is expected to grow by approximately 20,000 additional residents within 20 years. Comments will be accepted throughout the process and can be sent to [email protected].
