Caerphilly Council endorses Social Services report

Posted on : 20 Nov 2024 Caerphilly County Borough Council recently endorsed a report outlining the successes and challenges in delivering social services during the last financial year.

The Annual Report of the Director of Social Services, which was endorsed at a full Council meeting on Tuesday 12 November, reflects on performance during 2022/23 as well as outlining priorities for the future.

Key achievements listed in the report for 2022/23 include:
  • All service priorities have either been completed fully or form part of ongoing core service delivery.
  • Performance across both operational service areas has been maintained at positively high levels.
  • Adaptation works undertaken at a property to increase capacity for unplanned respite for children with disabilities.
  • Development and registration of a new two bed children's home in the borough.
  • The expansion of employment opportunities in catering for individuals accessing day services; with 8 people employed under the Council's terms and conditions, and several other have chosen to remain as volunteers.
The report acknowledges that there continue to be challenges facing Social Services including difficulties recruiting and retaining care staff. In addition, demand for services and the complexity of care needs continues to increase.

Key priorities identified for the current year are also outlined in the report and include:
  • Progress work to develop two new respite houses.
  • Open an additional property to provide unplanned respite for children with disabilities to support parent / carers.
  • To refurbish a large property to develop a 6 bedded supported accommodation property for children aged 16 plus.
  • To complete the refurbishment of Family Time centres at Woodfieldside in Blackwood and Ty Caledfryn in Caerphilly.
  • To develop further self-contained flats for adults with a learning and/or physical disability to enable them to live independently and increase their social networks
Cllr Elaine Forehead, the Council's Cabinet Member for Social Care, said "There are many challenges facing the social care sector, both on a local and national level. This report demonstrates that, despite these, Caerphilly continues to deliver high-quality person-centred services, and I'd like to thank everyone involved for their continued dedication and commitment."
