Happy Veterans Day

Happy Veterans Day from Sitnasuak Native Corporation, our Board of Directors, and our staff Today, we honor the brave men and women who have served our country, both in the past and present. Many are familiar with Alaska's unique military history, particularly the Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG) during World War II when Alaska was still a territory. Over 6,300 Alaska Natives from 107 communities volunteered in 1942 to serve in the ATG, protecting the territory's extensive 6,640-mile coastline. Reports indicate that some members were as young as 12 years old, while others were Elders aged 80 and older. The Alaska Territorial Guard (ATG) was incorporated into the Alaska Army National Guard (AK ARNG) in 1947

In the year 2000, members of the ATG were granted U.S. Veteran status, recognizing the contributions of thousands of Alaska Natives who served during WWII. The search for ATG Veterans continues. More information and the application to apply for ATG status can be found here >> https://veterans.alaska.gov/alaska-territorial-guard/

The Alaska Native Vietnam-era Veterans Land Allotment Program of 2019 is open to all eligible Alaska Natives who served in the armed forces between Aug. 5, 1964, and Dec. 31, 1971. More information can be found online here >> https://www.blm.gov/programs/lands-and-realty/regional-information/alaska/land-transfer/ak-native-allotment-act/alaska-native-vietnam-veterans-land-allotment

Join us in honoring and recognizing our veterans, both past and present, today.

SNC offices in Nome and Anchorage will be closed today in observance of the holiday and will reopen Tuesday, November 12, 2024, with regular business hours.
