THOMPSON VOTES TO ELIMINATE SOCIAL SECURITY PENSION BENEFIT RULES HARMING PUBLIC SERVANTS

Washington - Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) announced he voted to pass H.R. 82, the bipartisan Social Security Fairness Act, which repeals the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO) rules impacting the earned benefits of many retired public servants like teachers, police officers, firefighters, emergency services personnel, other first responders, and federal, state, and local employees who worked in both covered and non-covered jobs during their careers.

"No American should be penalized for their public service," said Thompson. "One of my top priorities in Congress is strengthening Social Security so our seniors can continue to receive the benefits they earned from a lifetime of hard work. The WEP and the GPO are unfair, and they hurt our retired public servants. I was proud to vote to pass the Social Security Fairness Act to repeal these unfair provisions impacting many retired teachers, first responders, and government employees."
