Seeking guest discussion facilitators for Times Talk fall semester 2024

American Democracy Project Wednesday August 7, 2024

The American Democracy Project at Georgia College & State University requests your support for another semester of engaging and lively weekly facilitated conversations on current events and topics of local and/or global public interest in any arts, sciences or humanities discipline or field. Times Talk is celebrating its 19th year as a GCSU campus tradition and a nationally innovative civic engagement program by providing a discussion space in the library for interested faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members to gather from noon to 12:50 p.m. every Wednesday to discuss a chosen topic of that week's volunteer facilitator. The facilitator spends a few minutes providing perspective and insights on the topic, uses a New York Times article or other credible news source for factual background/context and encourages participants to share their perspectives, observations, insights and questions.

Become part of the tradition by volunteering to facilitate a discussion on a topic of interest to you. Co-facilitator teams of faculty, staff, students and/or community members are encouraged. Since we can deliver Times Talk virtually, as well as in face-to-face format, we welcome international facilitator teams, as well. Here is a link to a very short introduction video about Times Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlvCnaQM7wo. I've attached the Times Talk tool kit which includes step-by-step directions for facilitators.

To volunteer, send your name and co-facilitators names, if any, topic idea in question format if possible, (For example: "Aid Without Saviorism: How Do We Help In Other Countries In Ethical Ways?") your contact information and preferred dates from the following options: Wednesdays-Sept. 4, Sept. 11, Sept. 18 (Constitution Week) Sept. 25, Oct. 9, Oct. 16, Oct. 23, Oct. 30, Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20 and Dec. 4 . Send this information to[email protected] who hosts and serves as the introducer, timekeeper and moderator for each program. You will be contacted as soon as possible for follow up. Times Talk facilitation dates are filled on a first come, first served basis.
