Honoring Dr. Ikuo Hirano: Establishing a named lecture at Digestive Disease Week® (DDW)

Dr. Hirano's contributions to the field of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) have been monumental, and we need your help to commemorate his life and work in establishing the Ikuo Hirano, MD, Lecture at DDW in perpetuity.

Dr. Ikuo Hirano: a legacy of excellence

Dr. Hirano was a brilliant physician and clinical researcher whose work helped define the field of EoE over the course of two decades. As an early pioneer in the disease, he was instrumental in advancing our understanding and treatment of EoE. His research on topical steroids and biologics has led to the development of FDA-approved medications that have transformed patient care.

Beyond his research, Dr. Hirano was a beloved mentor and educator. At Northwestern, where he spent nearly his entire faculty career, he directed the fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology, shaping the careers of countless future gastroenterologists. His leadership extended to the Kenneth C. Griffin Esophageal Center, positioning it as one of the foremost esophageal centers in the world.

Dr. Hirano's contributions were recognized at DDW 2024, where he was named the Research Mentor of the Year for the Esophageal, Gastric, and Duodenal (EGD) Council Section. His influence on education and his mentorship have left an indelible mark on the GI community. Learn more about Dr. Hirano.
