Humanitarian Aid Reaches 9 Countries, 48 US States — From Ukraine to the Caribbean to Texas

Direct Relief has delivered 650 shipments of requested medical aid to 48 U.S. states and territories and 9 countries worldwide over the past seven days, including emergency shipments in response to Hurricane Beryl in the Caribbean and Texas and wildfires in California.

The shipments contained 14.7 million defined daily doses of medication and supplies, including prenatal vitamins, field medic packs, personal protective equipment, and more.

Direct Relief Responding to Hurricane beryl

Preliminary reports indicate that Hurricane Beryl resulted in at least 29 deaths, including 11 in Grenada and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, two in Jamaica, and 16 across Texas, Louisiana, and Vermont, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Jamaica Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), and media reports. The storm also caused severe damage to critical infrastructure, including houses, health facilities, and water systems; disrupted communications, power, and other services; and severely impacted livelihoods, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Over the past week, Direct Relief has continued to deliver shipments to regions impacted by the storm including Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada. These shipments included medicine and supplies to treat dengue fever, including include mosquito-repellent wipes and spray, oral rehydration salts, acetaminophen for adults and children, and thermometers. and other requested items.

Additionally, following reports of power outages in Texas caused by the storm, Direct Relief is sending a large-capacity power generator to Spring Branch Community Health Center to help maintain power at their clinic located in Cypress, Texas. The donated generator will ensure reliable power in future emergencies and subsequent power outages.

Philippine Disaster Relief Foundation Visits Direct Relief

The Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation visited Direct Relief's Santa Barbara headquarters on July 16, 2024 to meet Direct Relief's leadership staff and sign a memorandum of intent to streamline disaster response in the region.

The Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation collaborates with Direct Relief on enhancing disaster resilience in the country, working on areas including disaster prevention and mitigation, emergency preparedness, response, and and recovery.

Ukraine Relief

This week, several shipments of medical aid and personal care items from Direct Relief arrived with local Ukrainian organization Ukrainian Soul, which distributed the supplies to communities across Ukraine, including Nikopol, situated on banks of the Dnipro River, where supplies are limited due to the war.

Ukrainian Soul also provided urgently needed medications from Direct Relief to the hospitals in the Ukrainian cities of Kremenchuk and Tomakivk, including antibiotics, surgical supplies, and medications for cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and other conditions.

Since January 1, 2024, Direct Relief has delivered 13,600 shipments to 2,001 partner organizations in 54 U.S. states and territories and 80 countries.

These shipments contained 244.9 million defined daily doses of medication valued at $858.9 million (wholesale) and totaling over 3.3 million pounds.
