In preparation for any public order events surrounding the election this week, the Portland Police Bureau ensured it was fully staffed; days off were cancelled for sworn personnel and they were directed to work 12-hour shifts. While working in Unified Command with the Portland Bureau of Emergency Management and Portland Fire & Rescue, command has managed this extra staff during this special operational period to ensure high-visibility proactive work as directed by Chief Bob Day.
Officers assigned to public order have assisted with answering emergency 911 calls for service. In addition, they have conducted traffic enforcement as well as proactive missions to address crimes such as retail theft and stolen vehicles. From Tuesday through Wednesday, PPB personnel made more than 1,200 contacts with businesses and community members.
On Thursday, November 7, 2024, officers arrested 13 people on charges related to illegal guns, illegal drugs, reckless driving, eluding, theft and warrants. Officers stopped 156 drivers, issued 105 citations, 29 warnings, and towed 6 vehicles.
During one stop, Traffic Officers made an arrest for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, Possession of a Control Substance, Distribution of a Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm.
