Tim Eaton Exhibits at Richard Boyd Art Gallery

  • September 23, 2024

Join Richard Boyd Art Gallery in welcoming Tim Eaton a highly regarded award-winning Stamford, CT fine and commercial artist to the group of artists represented by the gallery in Southern Maine. Tim has painted scenery for as long as he can remember. The works he produces are entirely done from recollections and imagination. Though he is constantly studying nature through the use of digital photography, there are never any photos used for reference near his easel. He is able to do this after having spent many years travelling and painting watercolors "a la plein air" in France, Italy, Turkey, and China.

This approach finds its premise and its intent in a quote, which hangs in his studio, from the famous French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas on training the visual memory. "It is all very well to copy what you see; It is much better to draw what you only see in memory. There is a transformation during which the imagination works in conjunction with the memory. You only put down what made an impression on you, that is to say the essential. Then your memory and your invention are freed from the dominating influence of nature. That is why pictures made by a person with a trained memory are almost always remarkable works."

Tim's landscapes capture poetically harmonious moments in the natural world. Through years of trial and experimentation he continues to discover fresh ideas, compositions and a variety of techniques all with the intention of creating visually appealing works to inspire a distinct emotional connection with his viewers. Most of his work is executed on archival linen or other durable substrates using a combination of color fast acrylics and modified oils, therefore created to resist damage by sunlight and other environmental conditions for many lifetimes. Mr. Eaton holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Vermont. He spent a year under the instruction of Richard Whitney who at the time was the youngest member of the Boston Guild of Professional Portrait and Landscape Painters, and two years studying painting techniques at the National School of Decorative Art in Nice, France.

Professionally, he has taught decorative painting and finishing techniques to trade groups across the country and has a specialty paint contracting business based in Stamford, Connecticut where he currently works with several designers, fellow contractors and architects creating works to meet specific size and color requirements.

About the Artist

Tim Eaton has painted scenery for as long as he can remember from recollections and imagination. "Some writer's experience "writer's block." But as a visual artist, I'm never at a loss. My mind is in a constant state of desire to create the next, the most vibrant, the most compelling image I have ever created. I cannot turn it off. Most times the problem is the opposite of the writer's challenge, such as what is the next composition going to reveal? Which concept will satisfy that inner need to produce the most inspiring image ever? I just keep creating from the gift I was given for the sake of inspiration to anyone who sees it.

Interestingly, the images I produce are often a collection of memories and imagination that even I cannot comprehend. They just are. The images emerge from within, and they evolve as they are being created. Whether a traditional landscape or a large abstract, I have developed a trust in myself that the solutions will come, the answers are in my hands and in my spirit. My responsibility is to let them develop as they will, from my own experience, my years of experimentation and discovery.

Sometimes pieces just need to rest for a while, to be taken up again and revisited, improved upon, and given a new meaning, a new intention, a more powerful impact. Perhaps this is the fuel that is needed to prevent the "block" that many creators experience. I just don't have this challenge. So much to draw from, and so little timeā€¦

The images I create are meant to inspire a sense of peace and hope, a sense of renewal. The way I see it, the world needs it."
