Mike Rogers Joins Ranks of 2024’s Anti-Equality Senate Candidates

WASHINGTON - Tonight, Mike Rogers became the Republican party's nominee for U.S. Senate in Michigan-putting his out-of-touch, anti-equality record in the spotlight. Despite a majority of Michiganders supporting abortion rights, Mike Rogers loudly proclaimed his support for a near-total abortion ban. When he had the chance to help pass vital hate crimes protections in honor of Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr., Rogers voted against it. That's why HRC Equality Votes PAC is highlighting what his real record looks like - and why Michigan's 2.3 million Equality Voters will ensure he loses at the ballot box in November.

"No matter how much he tries to dodge hard questions on LGBTQ+ rights, abortion access, and other issues important to Michiganders, Mike Rogers has a long and disturbing history of positions that put him squarely in the furthest fringes of the MAGA right," said Laurel Powell, HRC Equality Votes PAC spokesperson. "The 2.3 million Equality Voters in Michigan will make sure he pays a political price for his votes against marriage equality, abortion rights, and protections for pre-existing conditions at the ballot box."

Rogers has a long history opposing Michiganders' rights and freedoms, including:

  • Voting against the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act;

  • Voted multipletimesagainst marriage equality;

  • Voted against the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the discriminatory military policy that caused LGBTQ+ service members to be discharged for who they are or who they love;

  • Voted against a fully-inclusive Violence Against Women Act (VAWA);

  • Voted against the Affordable Care Act, which bans insurance companies from discriminating against people with pre-existing conditions and LGBTQ patients

  • Scored 0/100 on every HRC Congressional Scorecard released while he was in office

HRC Equality Votes PAC previously highlighted anti-equality candidates Donald Trump, Kari Lake, Mark Robinson, Bernie Moreno, David McCormick, Eric Hovde, Sam Brown, Tim Sheehy, Mike Lawler, and Tim Calvert, showing the broad reach of these radical candidates across the country. The website is just the latest way HRC Equality Votes PAC is lifting up the radical records of anti-equality politicians. In June, it released its first digital ad of the 2024 cycle, "At His Word," which uses Trump's own statements to demonstrate how a second Trump term threatens all of our rights and would target the LGBTQ+ community's ability to live as our authentic selves.

From now until November, the HRC Equality Votes PAC will work to mobilize 75 million Equality Voters, including 2.3 million Equality Voters in Michigan, by communicating what's at stake for the LGBTQ+ community and the threats posed to our rights and freedoms by MAGA politicians. Equality Voters are younger, more racially diverse, and more female than the general electorate. Read more about the 75 million Equality Voters here.
