Micronipol adquirida pela multinacional francesa Veolia acelera economia circular do plástico em Portugal

The acquisition of Micronipol, a company from Ourém specialized in recycling polymers with more than 20 years of activity, by the Veolia Group from the Portuguese venture capital Explorer Investments, reinforces the presence of that French giant in Portugal in the collection, transport, recycling and recovery sector of waste, now including plastic recycling. It is the culmination of the investment in a development project started in 2021 and applied on all fronts, from the "factory floor" to the management team.

Founded in 2000 and located in Ourém, Micronipol is a polyethylene and polypropylene waste recycling company. It produces recycled plastic granules, which is the raw material for other industries to manufacture products such as pipes for construction or agriculture, detergent packaging, plastic bags, mattresses, toilet cisterns, asphalt screens or small plastic parts such as containers, boxes or containers.

In 2021, Explorer Investments entered the company's capital in a development project that included the professionalization of the management team, the increase in production capacity, the internationalization of the customer base, investment in water treatment and quality and, more recently, increasing energy independence through the installation of a solar park.

Micronipol annually produces around 20 thousand tons of high-quality recycled plastic from industrial and domestic plastic waste which, when reintroduced into the production chains of various industries, contributes to reducing the consumption of virgin raw materials and the consequent decarbonization process. .

Veolia Portugal concluded, on May 31st, the process of acquiring one hundred percent of Micronipol, from funds managed by Explorer Investments, a Portuguese venture capital company.

According to the company, this acquisition aligns with Veolia's new strategic "GreenUp" 2024-2027 program, which aims to accelerate ecological transformation, to combat pollution, the scarcity of essential resources and support cities and industries in decarbonization of its activities.

José Melo Bandeira, CEO of Veolia Portugal: "Plastic recycling is an investment priority"

"The acceleration and large-scale implementation of plastic recycling is an investment priority for the Veolia Group for the coming years, with today more than 40 recycling centers in its global Plastiloop network. The integration of Micronipol allows us to also place Portugal on the map of this network and thus accelerate the circular plastic economy in our country, with benefits for the decarbonization of our industries", says José Melo Bandeira, CEO of Veolia Portugal.

The acquisition of Micronipol by Veolia Portugal from the Portuguese venture capital company was validated by the Competition Authority on April 30, having decided that "it is not likely to create significant obstacles to effective competition in the national market".

In the acquisition process that is now being concluded, Veolia Portugal received assistance from the teams at Abreu Advogados (legal and due diligence) and PWC (M&A Advisory and due diligence). Explorer Investments, in turn, was advised by Arcano, KPMG and PLMJ.

Operation of the Lipor Energy Recovery Plant

Headquartered in Paris and with around 218 thousand employees across five continents, the group designs and implements transformative, useful and efficient solutions for water, waste and energy management.

In 2023, the Veolia group served 113 million people with water supply and 103 million with wastewater sanitation, produced 42 TWh of energy and recovered 63 million tons of waste.

In Portugal, Veolia is headquartered in Paço de Arcos, Lisbon, and has been present since 1992, with water, energy and waste management activities for industrial, municipal and tertiary sector clients.

In the area of waste, it is currently responsible for managing more than 500 thousand tons of waste, with its main references in our country being the operation of the Lipor Energy Recovery Plant; the management of industrial and commercial waste through its three operational centers located in Santa Maria da Feira, Loures and Silves; and also the collection of urban waste, including the selection of bio-waste, urban cleaning and management of a municipal eco-center in Aveiro.
