Foreign Ministry takes part in repatriation ceremony for revolutionary Catarino Garza Rodríguez

• The project to search for and repatriate the remains of Mexican revolutionary Catarino Garza Rodríguez is a key component of the Historical and Cultural Memory of Mexico initiative, spearheaded by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Yesterday in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, President López Obrador led a solemn ceremony to mark the repatriation of Catarino Garza Rodríguez's remains.

The event was attended by Undersecretary for Latin America and the Caribbean Laura Elena Carrillo Cubillas, representing Foreign Secretary Alicia Bárcena Ibarra. Also present was Laura Beatriz Moreno Rodríguez, Mexican Ambassador to Chile, who coordinated the investigation, search, and repatriation efforts.

In her remarks, Undersecretary Carrillo emphasized that this project is integral to President López Obrador's Historical and Cultural Memory initiative. The initiative aims to preserve archives, libraries, and newspaper collections, thereby honoring the legacy of men and women who have been instrumental in shaping Mexico's identity and culture.

"Our nation remains incomplete without accounting for every Mexican whose fate is unknown," said Undersecretary Carrillo. "We are committed to finding each and every one. This Mexico leaves no one behind." She further stated that the repatriation effort exemplified a broader vision of cooperation with sister nations like Panama.

Ambassador Moreno offered her perspective, saying: "Catarino Garza was a conscientious Mexican who, alongside his contemporaries, not only spoke out but took action in the fight for freedom, democracy, and equality. While his initial struggle targeted Porfirio Díaz's dictatorship, Garza's influence ultimately resonated across Latin America-a champion of justice whose legacy transcends national boundaries."

The ceremony was also attended by President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo; Beatriz Gutiérrez Mueller, wife of President López Obrador; Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya; Attorney General Alejandro Gertz Manero; and descendants of Catarino Garza.

The Mexican Government, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, extends its heartfelt gratitude to Panama for its unwavering support in this endeavor to preserve historical memory, symbolized by the repatriation of Catarino Garza Rodríguez's remains.
