Canada Announces Tariffs on EVs, Steel, and Aluminum from China

In a Press release published on August 26, 2024, the Canadian Department of Finance announced a series of new tariffs on imports of steel, aluminum, and electric vehicles (EVs) from China.

The Canadian government will implement a 100 percent tariff on all Chinese-made EVs, including "electric and certain hybrid passenger automobiles, trucks, buses, and delivery vans." This tariff will go into effect on October 1, 2024.

Canada will also implement a 25 percent tariff on imports of certain steel and aluminum products from China. The Department of Finance provided an initial list of products subject to this tariff, open to public comment. The finalized list of products will be published by October 1, 2024, and the tariffs will come into effect on October 15, 2024. These tariffs will not apply to Chinese goods in transit to Canada on the day of enforcement.
