Mayor Ted Wheeler penned a letter to the Oregon Public Utility Commission on August 27, 2024 urging them to reconsider a proposed utility rate increase.

Portland General Electric has requested a 10.9% rate increase to go into effect in 2025. Rate increase of 18% went into effect in January 2024. PGE's residential rates have gone up more than 40% since 2021.

"This proposal places an undue burden on Portland's residents, particularly our most vulnerable populations, as well as adding significant new costs for the City of Portland at a time when budget cuts are already impacting city services," Mayor Wheeler wrote.
