The Nautical Almanac: Navigating the Seas with Precision

The Nautical Almanac is a subset of the Astronomical Almanac that contains the data needed for celestial navigation. It was first as part of the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac and then on its own to provide the U.S. Navy with a convenient form of astronomical data for celestial navigation. This book remains the standard resource for marine celestial navigation for the U.S. Navy and is still used today as a backup to GPS and other electronic navigation systems.

The new Nautical Almanac for The Year 2025 is now available from the U.S. Government Bookstore.

What's inside the Nautical Almanac?

This annual publication is a treasure trove of astronomical information, including:

  • Celestial Body Positions: Accurate data on the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars.
  • Rise and Set Times: Precise calculations for sunrise, sunset, moonrise, and moonset.
  • Tide Predictions: Essential information for coastal navigation and planning.
  • Navigation Tables: Comprehensive tools for celestial navigation calculations.
  • Ephemeris Data: Detailed information on planetary and lunar positions.

While the Nautical Almanac is primarily used for navigation, its applications extend far beyond the maritime world. Amateur astronomers can use it to plan observations, track celestial events, and deepen their understanding of the night sky. Even those with a casual interest in astronomy can find the Almanac fascinating and informative.
